A useful phone shortlist begins with your day, not a discount banner. A student reading lecture notes, a trader replying to customers and a creator editing videos may need very different devices—even when their budgets are similar.
Start with three tasks you do every day
Write down the activities your next phone must handle comfortably. Examples include reading documents, joining video calls, taking product photographs or switching between messaging and a spreadsheet. Put these tasks in order. This makes it easier to decide which features deserve your budget and which are optional.
Try a small task on a demonstration device when possible: read a page of text, type a paragraph and take a photo in ordinary indoor lighting. A phone that looks attractive in a specification table may feel too large, too heavy or awkward to type on.
Budget for the complete setup
Decide on a total spending limit before choosing the handset. Ask what is included in the box, then allow for any compatible charger, cable, protective case and delivery charge you need. Do not assume that accessories shown in promotional photography are included.
- Essential: the phone and any charging equipment you actually need.
- Useful: suitable protection and an audio option for calls.
- Optional: extra accessories that can wait until you know how you use the device.
Compare the exact version
A shared model name does not establish that two offers are identical. Record the storage, RAM where specified, network version, condition and included items for each offer. Ask the seller to explain unclear descriptions such as “open box” or “refurbished” in writing.
Check your present phone’s storage use before deciding on capacity. If photographs and downloaded lessons already take up much of the space, include that in your shortlist. Read our phone storage guide for a starting point.
Ask questions that reveal daily usability
- Is the screen comfortable to read indoors and outdoors?
- Can you comfortably hold the device and reach its controls?
- Does the exact model support your intended SIM arrangement?
- Are the apps and accessibility features you need available?
- What software-support information does the manufacturer publish for this model?
- What are the seller’s written warranty and return terms?
Choose accessories after the phone
Confirm the exact model before buying a case or screen protector. For charging equipment, check the device manufacturer’s requirements and the adapter and cable specifications together. For calls, consider comfort and microphone usability rather than choosing only by appearance.
Make the final comparison manageable
Keep three candidates at most. For each, record the exact configuration, complete price, main advantage and main compromise. If you cannot explain why the most expensive option helps with your three everyday tasks, reconsider whether the extra spending is worthwhile for you.
